Freesia FAQ

Everything you need to know about our freesias — how long they last, how to care for them, ordering and gift messages, delivery and shipping, and our guarantee.

About our freesias

Are freesias scented?

Yes — freesias are one of the most fragrant cut flowers there is, with a sweet, fresh scent often described as fruity with a light peppery note. It's why freesias are used in perfumes and soaps. The fragrance is strongest once the blooms open, and intensity can vary by season and colour.

What do freesias smell like?

Sweet and fresh, with fruity and softly citrus notes and a gentle peppery undertone. Richer colours (reds and pinks) tend to have the most robust scent, while whites and yellows are cleaner and brighter.

What grade are your freesias?

We send only A1 grade stems — the highest quality available — and keep them in temperature-accurate flower fridges right up until dispatch, so they leave us at their absolute freshest.

What colours of freesia can I order?

A wide range, including white, yellow, red, pink, dark pink, lilac and mixed, plus two-tone combinations. Mixed is our most popular.

Are freesias a good gift?

They're one of the most-loved flowers to send — fragrant, cheerful, long-lasting and right for almost any occasion, from birthdays and anniversaries to thank-yous, new babies, get-well and sympathy.

How long they last & flower care

How long do freesias last?

With proper care, our freesias last up to three weeks — more than double the vase life of an average bouquet. Because we send them in bud, they open in your home and you enjoy the full life of the blooms.

Why do your freesias last so long?

Three reasons: we use only A1 grade stems, we store them in temperature-accurate flower fridges until the moment they're dispatched, and we send them in bud so they bloom in your home rather than in transit.

Will the freesias arrive in bud or open?

In bud. We send them closed so they're protected in transit and then open in your home — which is exactly what gives them their long vase life.

How do I care for my flowers so they last?

Carefully remove all packaging, including the water pouch at the base of the stems. Trim about 3cm off the stems at a slant and place them in a clean vase with fresh water and the flower food provided. Keep them cool, away from radiators and direct sun. Change the water and re-trim the stems every other day, and remove any leaves below the waterline. Keep them away from ripening fruit, too — the ethylene gas shortens a freesia's life.

What if I've run out of flower food?

You can make your own: mix 1 litre of water with 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 1 teaspoon of sugar, stir, and use in place of shop-bought flower food.

Are freesias one of the longest-lasting flowers you can send by post?

Yes. Sent in bud and kept cool until dispatch, freesias are among the longest-lasting cut flowers for postal delivery — up to three weeks with proper care, well beyond the typical one-week life of an average bouquet.

Country-garden style

What flowers suit a country-garden or cottage-garden style?

Freesias are a classic choice — informal, sweetly scented and softly colourful, bringing that relaxed English country-garden feel, on their own or in a mixed, garden-style bouquet.

Do you sell scented, garden-style flowers by post?

Yes — our freesias are naturally fragrant with a soft, informal country-garden character, delivered by post across the UK. Our wildflower-style bouquets carry the same relaxed, seasonal feel.

Ordering, gift messages & discounts

How do I add a gift message or choose a delivery date?

Once you've chosen your flowers, click “send these flowers” at the top of the page, select any add-ons, then continue to enter your delivery date and gift message.

How do I add a discount code?

Enter it on the final checkout page, alongside your payment details. If a code appears invalid, it usually means that promotion has ended.

How do I confirm my order?

As soon as you've checked out and paid, we send a confirmation email with your order, delivery address, date and gift message. If anything needs changing, email help@guernseyflowersbypost.co.uk and we'll be happy to help.

I'm having difficulty purchasing — what should I do?

Don't worry — our team is happy to help. Get in touch at help@guernseyflowersbypost.co.uk with any questions at all.

Delivery & shipping

Do you deliver next day?

Yes — order before 4pm, Monday to Friday, for next-day delivery, and you can choose your preferred delivery date at checkout. We deliver by DPD and Royal Mail.

Where do you deliver?

Across the UK — all of mainland UK, plus the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Sark), the Isle of Man and the Isles of Scilly, and most of Northern Ireland. We don't currently ship internationally.

Will my flowers arrive exactly on the date I choose?

We always aim to deliver on your selected date. Occasionally we may deliver the day before, just to be safe, since we know flowers are often for a special occasion.

How will my order arrive?

In an eco-friendly Guernsey Flowers box with your gift note, hand-tied with a water sleeve at the base of the stems to keep them hydrated in transit. Flower care instructions are included, and we never put any billing information or invoices in the box.

I have another shipping question.

Email help@guernseyflowersbypost.co.uk — if you have a special request, we'll do our best to meet it.

Colours, guarantee & if something's not right

Can I get an exact colour, and do you ever substitute?

On rare occasions we may substitute a colour for a very similar one (for example red for dark pink) due to availability. If you need an exact colour for a special event, please order and then get in touch to let us know.

What happens if there's a problem with my order?

Every order is covered by our guarantee. If your order isn't perfect, send us a quick photo and we'll go the extra mile to make it right — we pride ourselves on your delivery being 100% perfect.

How quickly does your team respond?

We answer enquiries within one business day, and usually within a couple of hours. Email help@guernseyflowersbypost.co.uk and our team will do everything they can to help.

Remove packaging

Carefully remove the flowers from all of the packaging, including the water pouch at the end of the stems (if any).

Trim the stems

Trim the bottom of the flower stems at a slant by approximately 3cm and place in a vase with fresh water and flower food (if provided).

Keep them cool

Do not place your flower display near radiators or in very warm rooms. Your flowers will look their best and last longer in a cooler temperature.

Maintenance

Change vase water and re-trim the stems every other day. Prune any leaves below the waterline.

Temperature

Make sure the water is at the right temperature. Most flowers keep best in room-temperature water. Bulb flowers keep best in cool water or even cold water. Whether you’re using either cold or lukewarm water, fill your vase so it’s three-quarters full and keep topping it off as the flowers absorb more liquid.

Vase Water

Cut flowers do best in slightly acidic water, ideally with a pH level between 3.5 and 5.0. Any leaves submerged underwater can rot and cause bacterial growth, so it's important to regularly check your flowers and remove any underwater leaves.

Run out of flower food?

Why not create your own!

All you need to create this DIY food plant recipe is 1 litre of water, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. That’s it! Add all your ingredients to the water and stir until combined. This will help your blooms last longer and use less chemicals to do so.
