Long-Stem Freesias by Post
Long-stem freesias are the premium end of the freesia range — taller, thicker-stemmed, and carrying more florets than the shorter varieties you'll find in supermarkets. They're what we specialise in.
Delivered by post on your chosen date, lasting two to three weeks in the vase, and shipped with everything they need to arrive at their best.

What “long-stem” actually means
Freesias come in two broad growing categories: short-stem and long-stem.
Short-stem freesias grow 20-30cm tall and typically carry 3-5 florets per stem. They're what you'll find in most supermarket bouquets — cheaper to grow, faster to harvest, but smaller-scale.
Long-stem freesias — the varieties we grow and select — reach 40-50cm and carry 6-10 florets per stem. That means:
- Bigger blooms per stem
- More florets opening in sequence over the vase life
- A more dramatic bouquet in the vase
- Better value per stem despite the higher price per stem
For gifting, long-stem freesias look meaningfully more considered than shorter alternatives. For your own home, they're the difference between a bouquet that looks like a proper display versus one that gets lost.
Why they last so long
Long-stem freesias have three natural advantages over shorter varieties:
- Thicker stems hold more water and are less prone to bending
- More florets means the display unfolds over 10-14 days rather than 5-7
- Harvest timing — we cut at “bud crack” stage, when only the first floret is beginning to open, so the whole stem still has days of blooming ahead
Combined with our fresh dispatch (cut and shipped within 24 hours), you're getting the full two to three weeks at home rather than half of it having elapsed in a cold-store.

Colours we grow
Each of our long-stem varieties is available in:
- Mixed — our most popular option, blending white, cream, yellow, lilac and red
- White — for weddings, sympathy, or classic elegance
- Yellow — cheerful, friendship-associated, particularly popular for spring and thank-yous
- Lilac — the rarest colour and often the most striking
- Red — bold, less common than yellow or white, perfect for romantic occasions
- Pink — soft and photogenic, particularly popular for new babies and Mother's Day
If you know the recipient's favourite colour or the room they'll display them in, single-colour bouquets can be a lovely touch.

Why by post, and not from a local florist
There's a real argument for either. Here's ours:
A local florist gives you a same-day option and lets you choose from what's on hand. It works if you want a bouquet in the next few hours.
Freesias by post work when the delivery date matters more than the immediate turnaround. You pick the exact date, you know what you're getting, and you get long-stem varieties that most local florists don't stock. The price per stem is often better too.
For gifting specifically — where the date matters and you want the flowers to arrive at their peak — post-delivered long-stem freesias are the more considered choice.

What's the difference between your freesias and supermarket ones?

Remove packaging
Carefully remove the flowers from all of the packaging, including the water pouch at the end of the stems (if any).
Trim the stems
Trim the bottom of the flower stems at a slant by approximately 3cm and place in a vase with fresh water and flower food (if provided).
Keep them cool
Do not place your flower display near radiators or in very warm rooms. Your flowers will look their best and last longer in a cooler temperature.
Maintenance
Change vase water and re-trim the stems every other day. Prune any leaves below the waterline.
Temperature
Make sure the water is at the right temperature. Most flowers keep best in room-temperature water. Bulb flowers keep best in cool water or even cold water. Whether you’re using either cold or lukewarm water, fill your vase so it’s three-quarters full and keep topping it off as the flowers absorb more liquid.
Vase Water
Cut flowers do best in slightly acidic water, ideally with a pH level between 3.5 and 5.0. Any leaves submerged underwater can rot and cause bacterial growth, so it's important to regularly check your flowers and remove any underwater leaves.
Run out of flower food?
Why not create your own!
All you need to create this DIY food plant recipe is 1 litre of water, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. That’s it! Add all your ingredients to the water and stir until combined. This will help your blooms last longer and use less chemicals to do so.
